Short Keno history overview.

Not seeing on the fact that the simplest version of Keno was invented in China more than 1000 years ago, it wasn’t very popular till the end of 19th century. The first time when in Europe someone used some kind of “Keno” was 1515 when Jan Van Eyck’s widow organized the lottery to make some money from his paintings. But the real “history” of the Keno has begun in the beginning of twentieth century, in San Francisco – the city where all forms of gambling could be found at any time.

Actually San Francisco was the first city where Keno was played for the first time. The funny thing is that Keno came to the United States not from the Europe, but from Chinese sailors, who were working in the seaport. Needless to say that it became very popular and even despite the fact that gambling in the USA was illegal and prohibited by the US law. However, people continued to play Keno, with Chinese symbols changed to numbers for more convenience.

After gambling legalization in 1931 Keno, like all lotteries was forbidden, but operators found easy solution: they just changed its name to “Racehorse Keno”. It this version of the game each number was stuck to the horse. By the way, that’s why every draw in Keno is called “race”. After the government has passed the law about Keno legalization, its name was changed again and remains unchanged till the present time.

After the very first online casino was launched in 1995, Keno also went online, and thanks to revolution in internet industry it becomes even more popular than 10 years ago. Today, the estimated number of regular online Keno players is about 2 million people, and it keeps growing. That’s why online Keno could be found almost in every online casino.
